It is also important to remember that men in general after about 30 years of age begin to show lower levels of testosterone. Testosterone is not only important for maintaining sexual drive, penile size and erection but it is also important for mental sharpness. It is also necessary for maintaining good mood and mental energy. Loss of muscle mass, and brittleness of bones can occur with markedly low testosterone levels. Low testosterone can result in symptoms of depression that can include fatigue, decreased drive, decreased desire, and a state of mental fog.
While taking care of younger man with depression and attention deficit problems, I have seen lowered testosterone levels. Some of them experience lower sexual drive and erectile problems even in the mid 20s. Improving that testosterone levels through testosterone replacement or by supplements can be very helpful.
There has always been a concern that testosterone may lead to testicular cancer or increases the risk of prostate problems. So before beginning testosterone replacement, your doctor may wish to do certain tests like measuring PSA. In recent articles value of PSA measurement has been debated. A better idea is to measure it on an ongoing basis to see if it is tending to increase.
A recent paper presented at June 2014 meeting of American society of Clinical Oncology by Dr. Haider , who studied more than 900 cases, showed that Testosterone replacement did not increase risk of Prostate cancer in men with low functioning testes – low testosterone. http://meetinglibrary.asco.org/content/133660-144
Future research may also indicate that testosterone is very useful in maintaining bone, brain, and cardiac health.
Call on your doctor if you need help with testosterone.
Happy Father’s Day….
