Since the movie “American Sniper (click to learn about Mr. Chris Kyle and the movie)” there has been talk about veterans suffering from PTSD. There are various treatments available from therapy to medications to hospital treatments. PE and EMDR are two therapies available which do not use medications. Remember that a patient may require more than one type of treatment and different combinations at different times. There are no “standard protocols” for PTSD treatment.
Prolonged Exposure Treatment for PTSD
Prolonged Exposure (PE) involves repeatedly revisiting a traumatic event, under the theory that prolonged exposure will normalize the event and reduce PTSD symptoms. PE generally involves exercises to relax the mind and habituation to traumatic settings across time. Imagery or other devices can be helpful to simulate elements of the traumatic event.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
EMDR is designed to reduce PTSD through processing the meaning of the event in the context of the patient’s autobiographical memory. It is also unique in that it relies on a dual technique of eliciting distressing memories while distracting the patient with physical stimuli, such as the patient following the therapist’s fingers with his or her gaze. After the memory is expressed, the patient will be asked to notice whatever feelings or ideas come to mind. Positive associations are encouraged and practiced, along with the eye movements.
Both EMDR and PE treatment sessions last about 90 minutes. Course of treatment is about 8-10 sessions. Many people claim expertise in EMDR. Find a well trained therapist.
